Using Color B, follow General Instructions: Covered Forms: Decreasing Around the Back (see page 4).

small square (make 2 each) Rnds 1-5: With double strand of Color B and size 14 hook, follow General Instructions for Basic Square Bases (see page 3) — 40 sts. Helpful Hint: The actual leaves and flowers for the small square are made the same way as those of the centerpiece square. The differences in the pattern only affect the areas surrounding the flowers. Rnd 6: Change to Color A. Begin with [[sc in corner st, dtr3tog in 5th st ahead (the center st on that side — 1st leaf made), sc in next 4 sts, dtr 1 st back on Rnd 1 (stem made), sk 1 st on Rnd 5, sc in next 4 sts, FPdtr3tog in dtr (2nd leaf made)]] 4 times, ending with si st in beg st. Fasten off — 48 sts.

Note: On Rnds 7-9, when working the "overlaid" stitches, insert hook all the way through the square to the back before pulling up loops. Also, you will find that you need to pull up the first loop after each insertion much farther than you normally would, since you are working around an increasingly large bulk of stitches. Rnd 7: Change to Color E. Begin with [[3 sc in corner st, sc in next st, working between the two leaves and to the right of the stem, dtr3tog in same st on Rnd 5 as on last round, sk 1 st on Rnd 6, sc in next 3 sts, ch 1, sk 1 st, sc in next 3 sts, dtr3tog in same st on Rnd 5 as last, sk 1 st on Rnd 6, sc in next st]] 4 times, ending with si st in beg st. Fasten off — 56 sts. Rnd 8: Change to Color D. Begin with [[3 sc in corner st, sc in next 3 sts, dtr3tog in same st on Rnd 5 as for 2 previous rounds, sk 1 st on Rnd 7, sc in next 2 sts, ch 1, sk 1 st, sc in next 2 sts, dtr3tog in same st on Rnd 5 as last, sk 1 st on Rnd 7, sc in next 3 sts]]

4 times, ending with si st in beg st. Fasten off — 64 sts. Rnd 9: Change to Color C. Begin with |[3 sc in corner st, sc in next 7 sts, tr5tog in same st on Rnd 5 as for 3 previous rounds, sk 1 st on Rnd 8, sc in next 7 sts]] 4 times, ending with si st in beg st. Fasten off — 72 sts. Rnd 10: Change to Color A. Begin with si st in any corner st on Rnd 5, [[ch 5, sc in last 3 sts just prior to tr5tog on Rnd 9, sc in tr5tog, sc in next 3 sts, ch 5, si st in next corner st on Rnd 5]] 4 times, ending with si st in beg st. Fasten off — 72 sts. Rnd 11: Change to Color F Begin with [[sc in first ch made on Rnd 10 and in each st around on Rnd 10]] 4 times, ending with si st in beg st. Do not fasten off.

Rnd 12: With Color B, (change to Color B) sc in next st, sc in each st around.
