10 Create the frame

Roll the black clay scraps into a long rope and flatten at the fifth thickest pasta setting. Cut a long, W (6mm) wide strip with slicing blade. Using your finger, add a thin layer of liquid softener around the edges and secure the strip. Smooth the seams.

Using a slicing blade, cut off the excess clay to make the frame flush with the top edge of the mosaic. Be careful to avoid the tiles. Bake for 25 minutes and then allow the clay to cool. Carefully wet-sand the brooch with 600- and then 800-grit sandpaper. Dry the clay, then buff on a buffing wheel or with a piece of denim fabric. Glue a pin back horizontally near the top back center edge with quick-dry cyanoacrylate glue and dry flat.
