Long Strand For Special Beads

THIS LONG NECKLACE CAN BE SLIPPED OVER THE HEAD AND WORN EITHER SINGLE OR DOUBLED. SPECIAL BEADS INCLUDE A MALACHITE PI, A SWIRL-CARVED ONYX BALL, HANDMADE SILVER FROM SRI LANKA, AND SWAROVSKI CRYSTAL.

YOU WILL NEED

Beading thread

2 flexible beading needles

Clip or tape

Glass, stone, silver, arid semiprecious beads

Seed beads, size 11 Cut beads, size 11 Bead glue

HOW-TO:

Making a continuous necklace, page 20.

1 i niece of thread twice the finished length of 11» necklace plus 1 yard (.9 m). For example, to flake (Mt 5CNnch strand shown here, cut the thread 3-3/J yards long {3,46 m).

2 on n flexible needle. Double the thread Mil dor.' Knoi it. Clip or tape the tails together temporarily auout 8 inches (20.5 cm) from the end.

3 String on the beads. One good approach is to create a series of segments that feature four to seven seed beads, several accent beads, and a special bead.

4 When the beads are strung, unclip the tails and string the second needle onto them. Cross-thread the necklace and knot several times on each side. Dab the knots with glue.

YOU WILL NEED

Beading thread

Masking tape

Beading needles

Seed beads (size 10 to 13) in a variety of colors

Pair of cones

Hook-and-eye clasp

Large eye pin or 18-gauge wire

Round-nose pliers

Bead cement

small seed beads don't have to be woven into intricate patterns. simply, strung on multiple strands in the same order, they produce wonderful bands of color.

3 Cut a piece of thread 6 to 8 inches (15.5 to 204 cm) longer than the necklace will be and tape ontI end to the table with masking tape. String the beads In the chosen order. Set the strand aside. I taping both ends.

4 String the remaining strands of beads in Ihc same manner.

5 Finish the necklace with the cones and clasp.

1 Decide the length of the necklace and the num ber of strands. (The one shown Is 28 Inches, or 72 cm. end to end and contains 13 strands of beads.)

2 Determine the order of the color bands and how wide you want each band to be. Write down a list of how the necklace will go—for example. 10 coral. 20 teal, 3 pink. 1 gold, 3 pink, 10 coral, etc. Or. if you'd rather measure than count. 1 inch (2.5 cm) of coral. 2 Inches (5 cm) of teal, etc.
